REACT


REACT (Resource-AwaRE Agriculture using Control Technology) is an applied research project led by the University of Seville in collaboration with the Guadalquivir Hydrographic Confederation (CHG). The initiative addresses the critical challenges of climate change, water scarcity, and agricultural sustainability in Andalusia and the Mediterranean region by advancing from Agriculture 4.0 to Agriculture 5.0. Rather than relying solely on high-cost full automation, REACT develops accessible, human-and-robot-in-the-loop technologies that combine the mobility and precision of autonomous devices (drones and surface robots) with the perception and decision-making capabilities of farmers and operators. 
The main goals of the project are: 
  1. Advanced Agro-Hydrological Modeling: Developing mechanistic and machine-learning models that integrate water extraction/transport, crop dynamics, soil quality, climate forecasts, and market prices. 
  2. Human-Robot Collaborative Monitoring: Designing cost-effective data-gathering frameworks where ground operators and autonomous robots co-monitor crops, soil, and water levels. 
  3. Model Predictive Control (MPC): Implementing multi-level, event-based, and stochastic MPC algorithms to optimize water distribution, reduce energy consumption, and minimize environmental impact across small and large agricultural holdings.
